A Brookhaven resident, David Tiler Castillo, was sentenced to 40 months in federal prison on January 13, 2026, for wire fraud. He was also ordered to pay $928,500 in restitution after being found guilty of defrauding investors.

Court documents show that Castillo, age 23, misled investors by claiming he would invest their money in marketable securities such as stocks. In reality, he invested only about $3,000 and used the rest of the funds for personal expenses, including buying vehicles.

The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney J.E. Baxter Kruger of the Southern District of Mississippi, U.S. Secret Service Special Agent in Charge Patrick Davis, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch, and Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson.

The investigation involved the United States Secret Service, the Mississippi Secretary of State Securities Division, and the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office Cyber Crime Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney Dave Fulcher prosecuted the case.
