A Colorado man has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, following a traffic stop in Warren County, Mississippi. Erick Moreno, 44, was found with the weapon while he was on federal supervised release for a prior conviction related to firearm possession.

Court records show that Moreno was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 10, 2024. He entered a guilty plea on June 10, 2025. Federal and state laws prohibit individuals with felony convictions from possessing firearms.

Acting U.S. Attorney Patrick A. Lemon for the Southern District of Mississippi and ATF Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson announced the sentencing.

The case was investigated by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives along with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Amber Jones prosecuted the case.

According to officials, this prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative that brings together resources from the Department of Justice to address illegal immigration and target violent crime through programs such as Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
