A Jackson man has pleaded guilty in federal court to attempting to rob a dollar store with a firearm. According to court documents, Torrance Stewart, 31, entered the business on May 2, 2022, and threatened the store clerk while brandishing a pistol. He demanded money from the cash register, but when the register malfunctioned, Stewart fled on foot. Officers from the Jackson Police Department responded and apprehended him in a nearby neighborhood.
Stewart is scheduled for sentencing on December 15, 2025. He faces up to 20 years in prison. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge after reviewing the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.

Acting U.S. Attorney Patrick A. Lemon of the Southern District of Mississippi and ATF Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson announced the plea.
The United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is leading the investigation with support from the Jackson Police Department.
This case falls under Operation Take Back America (https://www.justice.gov/dag/media/1393746/dl?inline), an initiative that uses resources from several Department of Justice programs to address illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect communities from violent crime through collaboration among agencies such as Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
